Trinity Theatre Embraces Quick Wins Through Free ESG Audit

Toby Horner from Amplifi, sat down with Jess Knott, General Manager of Trinity Theatre and Arts Centre, to talk about their recent free Sustainability and ESG audit with Dave Carter from Auditel. This initiative, led by amplifi, is designed to support SMEs in Tunbridge Wells by offering hands-on, no-cost guidance to kick-start their sustainability journeys.

Though initially apprehensive about diving into a waste audit—literally sorting through their bins—Jess and her team quickly got stuck in with Dave’s support. The process was surprisingly quick, taking just a couple of hours, and proved to be both eye-opening and encouraging. “Dave was incredibly knowledgeable and approachable,” said Jess. “And thankfully, Trinity was already doing better than I thought!”

The audit revealed several easy-to-implement improvements. For instance, backstage areas were not separating recycling—a missed opportunity for both staff and performers to engage in everyday sustainability. Jess has since installed three clearly marked bins in the dressing rooms and created posters tailored to Trinity’s most commonly discarded materials, making recycling simple and accessible.

Jess is also working on arranging a food waste collection service to complement their existing efforts. Trinity already operates a ‘once it’s gone, it’s gone’ lunch system and defrosts food in small batches to reduce waste—initiatives that the audit reinforced as good practice.

Encouraged by the results, Jess is urging other local businesses to take advantage of the free support on offer. “It’s time really well spent,” she said. “Dave made the whole process motivating and manageable. Plus, you’ll definitely uncover quick wins.”

Looking ahead, Jess plans to lead a cross-departmental sustainability team at Trinity. She also highlighted their recent installation of Herschel infrared heaters as a step towards a net-zero heating solution—particularly relevant for businesses based in heritage buildings. While she acknowledged the challenges of implementing change in a Grade II* listed venue, she was clear: sustainability is firmly embedded in Trinity’s long-term strategy.

Well done Trinity theatre.
