Making Sustainability Simple for Independent Pubs

Independent pubs are an important part of the community, but keeping them running sustainably can be a challenge. Larger companies have the benefit of dedicated teams and budgets to drive forward green practices, but others are often left to work it out for themselves.

Green Pub Club CIC was set up to change that. It's a volunteer-led, not-for-profit initiative helping independent pubs across the UK take practical, affordable steps to cut waste, reduce costs and lower their environmental impact.

How the Pilot Works

The 2025 pilot is designed to be quick and practical. Pubs complete a short (10-minute) online self-assessment covering six key areas:

  • Energy
  • Waste
  • Water
  • Plastic reduction
  • Sustainable sourcing
  • Staff engagement

They then receive:

  • Tailored recommendations that are realistic and cost-effective
  • A window sticker and digital badge to show their commitment
  • A listing in the Green Pub Club public directory
  • Ongoing tips and resources, plus rewards for referring other pubs

The scheme is about identifying simple steps, sharing ideas and making progress visible to customers.

Why Join?

Many of the changes we suggest can save pubs hundreds of pounds a year while also helping the environment. The pilot is straightforward, supportive and designed to fit around the realities of running an independent venue.

For pubs that want to do more but don’t have time to research every option, Green Pub Club offers a ready-made starting point and a community of others doing the same.
